Setup of Lutron lights

Setting up Lutron's Ketra lights at scale was time consuming, which affected installer adoption. I led designed a mobile app that made setup easier and delightful, and received a patent for my work.

Balancing needs of different users

Ketra lights are not just installed by Lutron certified installers in large homes and large offices. Think Bill Gate's holiday home and Apple park. However the needs of residential and commercial installers is different. I started by understanding the needs of all installers by traveling to constructions sites across the US.

Exploring mild to wild concepts

It was imperative that we made the solution mobile-based, to afford portability, and quick, so that an installer can save time. Along with engineering and product teams, I brainstormed different concepts, arriving at key product decisions.

Designing for scale and understandability

Most installers are setting up hundreds of Ketra lights. Not a few dozen like a Philips Hue. The key design goals were to ensure minimal training while ensuring setup is quick, with a bias towards speed of setup, rather than intuitiveness.

Bringing bold, delightful visuals to installers

After mutliple rounds of testing, we settled on the 2-step flow above. Key decions were made regarding the composition of the screen to balance the residential and commercial needs while using a dark theme to bring contrast.

Using motion to improve cognition

I focused on incorporating motion into 3 key areas of the feature, areas that we felt were “moments that mattered”. The goal was to improve the user's understanding of the system while making the app feel smooth.
