Setup of Lutron lights
Setting up Lutron's Ketra lights was costing installers' a lot of time, training and money. I designed a mobile app that significantly reduced setup time, inspired delight and received a patent.

Background
The major barrier to the adoption of Lutron's luxury lights was the friction involved in setting them up. Installers could take days to setup lights in a large home or office. I led the research and design of a mobile experience that significantly reduced the time to setup Ketra lights.

Defining the problem
I started by identifying the challenges faced by our target user, Lutron's lighting installer. As part of my research, I met with a handful of installers and traveled to construction sites in New York and Colorado to witness the challenges for myself.

Creating a concept
Along with cross functional stakeholders, I brainstormed different concepts, arrived at key product decisions and defined a concept for a mobile app that would scan and setup nearby devices.

Illustrating a minimum viable experience
I defined key design goals: ensuring the app needs minimal training, and ensuring setup is quick. Since we were building for professional installers, the bias was towards speed of setup, rather than intuitiveness. I used these design goals to define the minimal viable experience of the app.

After iterating through wireframes, I decided on the below flow. These are illustrated alongside storyboard images of how the lights in the space change color with the app.

Testing with a hardware prototype
To truly empathize with the user, it was important to conduct testing with real hardware. I had a few engineers hack a prototype that involved using iPhones in a ceiling to mimic the smart lights. This helped us learn that installers often spend less time looking at the screen and more time looking at the ceiling.

Crafting stunning visuals
I worked with a visual designer and an iconographer to create a theme that made the UI scannable. The dark theme was inteneded to meet user's functional needs while reflecting elegance and a refined aesthetic.
